Microchannel Architecture
- Microchannel Architecture
Abbreviated MCA. A 32-bit, proprietary expansion bus, first introduced by IBM in 1987 for the IBM PS/2 range of computers and also used in the IBM RS/6000 series.
MCA was designed for multiprocessing. It allows expansion boards to identify themselves, thus eliminating many of the conflicts that arose through the use of manual settings in the original bus. The MCA bus can also be driven independently by multiple bus master processors. MCA is physically and electronically incompatible with expansion boards that follow the earlier 16-bit AT bus standard; the boards are about 50 percent smaller, and the bus depends on proprietary integrated circuits.
